Pill Panic Strategy: How to Win

Everyone gets the same bottle and the same capsules, so Pill Panic is won by the player who uses them best. Here is how to clear faster, attack harder and survive the junk.

The one thing that matters most

Viruses are the only thing that counts. The first player to clear every virus wins, and the standings rank everyone else by fewest viruses left. Score only breaks ties.

So every capsule should do one of two jobs: clear a virus now, or set up a virus to clear soon. A neat stack of pills that touches no virus is wasted time.

The second rule is just as simple: keep the middle of the bottle open. Every capsule appears in the two middle columns at the top. If a capsule cannot fit there, you are out, no matter how few viruses you have left.

Your opening

Look at the bottle before the first capsule drops. You all have the same layout, so the race starts with reading it.

Find the viruses that are easy to reach: the ones near the top of the virus zone, and the ones with an open column above them. Those are your first targets.

Look for a virus that already has a same-color neighbor. Viruses never start three in a line, but two of a color side by side or stacked happen often. Two more halves of that color clear both at once, and two viruses in one clear score more than two cleared apart.

Use the loose pill halves scattered among the viruses. They count as cells of their color, so a red half next to a red virus is already half a line.

Placing capsules well

  • Stand a capsule up on a virus when both halves match it. That makes three of a color in one column, and any half of that color on top clears it.
  • Lay a capsule flat when its two colors match two different neighbors below or beside it.
  • Never cover a virus with a half of another color unless you have to. Every wrong half on top is a half you must clear before you can reach the virus.
  • When a capsule fits nowhere useful, park it at the side of the bottle, away from the middle and away from viruses you still need.
  • Check the next capsule before you place this one. If the next one is the color you need, leave a gap for it.
  • A capsule does not lock the instant it touches down. It waits about half a second (longer at slow speeds), and every slide or spin gives it the full wait again, up to a dozen times, so you have a moment to tuck it into a tighter spot.

The mid-game

Capsules fall a little faster every 10 you drop, up to two and a half times the starting speed. The speed-up counts capsules, not seconds, so dropping fast does not make the game harder. Once a capsule is lined up, flick down or press Space and get the next one.

As viruses go, think in columns. A tall column of mixed colors over a virus is the usual trap. Clear it from the top down, or leave it and work elsewhere until the colors you need come up.

Watch the strip of other bottles along the top of your screen. It shows how many viruses each player has left. If someone is far ahead, you need either a faster finish or a junk attack to slow them down.

Attacking: how to send junk

You send junk when one capsule clears two or more lines, counting the whole chain it sets off. Every other player gets one loose half per line, up to four, in the colors of the lines you cleared.

There are three ways to get two lines from one capsule:

  • A chain. Your clear frees a pill half that falls and completes a second line. Set this up by leaving a half above a near-line of its own color.
  • A cross. One half lands where it completes a line across and a line down at the same time.
  • Two lines at once. Both halves of a capsule finish separate lines of different colors.

Defending against junk

Junk never lands on a falling capsule. It waits until your capsule has settled, then drops from the top row, each half in its own random column. More than one batch drops one at a time before your next capsule.

Junk is a threat mostly when your middle columns are high. A half landing on a tall center stack can block the spot where capsules appear. Keep the center low and junk is a nuisance, not a knockout.

Junk can also help. Its halves line up and clear like any pill, and if falling junk sets off two or more lines on your bottle, that counts as your combo and sends junk back.

Common mistakes

  • Chasing points. Score only breaks ties. A virus cleared now beats a big combo later.
  • Building in the middle. The two middle columns are where you lose. Stack at the sides first.
  • Burying viruses under wrong colors to keep the bottle tidy.
  • Ignoring the next capsule. You always know what is coming, so plan two capsules at a time.
  • Waiting for capsules to fall on their own. Every second you wait is a second the race goes on without you.
  • Giving up when you fall behind. If your bottle stays open longest, you win even with viruses left.

Beating the bots

Bots play the same bottle and the same capsules you do, so a race against them is a fair one.

They plan one capsule at a time and do not look at the next one. They also pause to think before every move while the capsule keeps falling. Easy bots think longest and often take a worse spot on purpose. Hard bots think faster and slip up less.

That pause is their weak spot. On High speed, late in a round, a slow bot can run out of time and lock a capsule short of where it wanted. Raise the speed when you want the bots to stumble.

Bots send junk to you when they clear two or more lines, but never to each other. In a game with several bots, all their attacks land on the humans, so keep your middle low.

Playing with a group

The level and speed apply to every bottle in the round, so pick them for the room. Level sets how many viruses there are; speed sets how fast capsules fall and how many points each virus is worth.

With young kids or first-timers, start at a low level on Low speed. A short bottle keeps rounds quick and lets everyone finish. Raise the level a step at a time as the room gets better.

For a group of strong players, try a high level on High speed. More viruses mean longer rounds and more room for junk attacks to swing the race.

Put the watch page on a TV so the room can see who is close to clearing. Calling out a near-finish is half the fun.

Quick tips

  • Clear viruses, not pills.
  • Keep the two middle columns low.
  • Two matching halves stood on a matching virus make three in a column.
  • Drop fast once you are lined up. Speed-ups count capsules, not time.
  • Leave a half above a near-line to set up a chain.
  • Two lines from one capsule sends junk to everyone else.
  • Several viruses in one clear score far more than the same viruses one at a time.
  • Behind on viruses? Survive. Last bottle standing wins.

Questions

How do you win at Pill Panic?
Clear every virus in your bottle before anyone else. If everyone else fills their bottle first, you also win as the last player still going.
What is the best strategy for Pill Panic?
Target viruses with every capsule, keep the two middle columns low so new capsules always fit, plan with the next capsule, and drop fast once a capsule is lined up.
How do you send junk in Pill Panic?
Clear two or more lines with one capsule. Chains count, and so does a capsule that finishes a line across and a line down at once. Each line sends one half, up to four.
How do you beat the bots in Pill Panic?
Bots plan one capsule at a time and pause before each move. Plan two capsules ahead, drop fast, and raise the speed so the slower bots run out of time late in the round.
Does score decide the winner in Pill Panic?
No. Clearing your bottle first or lasting longest wins. After the winner, players are ranked by fewest viruses left, and score only breaks ties.
