A free Quiplash alternative: funny answers, head to head

Quiplash made the game. This is a free one in the browser, with nothing to buy, and bots so it plays with one.

The short version

Quiplash is Jackbox Games’ game of funny answers, and the one most people mean when they say “a Jackbox game”. Players type a response to a prompt, two responses go head to head, and everyone else votes for their favorite. One person buys it, on its own or inside a Jackbox Party Pack, and runs it on a console, a computer or a TV device for the room.

Zinger is the same kind of game, free in the browser. Two players get the same prompt, like “A terrible name for a cruise ship”, and each writes the funniest answer they can. The two answers go up side by side with no names on them, and everyone else votes. Then the names come out. There is nothing to buy, the host’s phone is enough to run it, and bots fill the table so one or two people can play.

Zinger is new, and its set of prompts is smaller than a game with several versions behind it. If the writing is what you are after and you play often, read “When Quiplash is still the right pick” below first.

How a round goes

  1. Write. You get two prompts, each shared with a different player. Type an answer to each. Everyone sees who has finished, never what they wrote. Stuck? Help me fills one in, for half the points.
  2. Vote. Each prompt goes up with its two answers and no names. Everyone except the two writers taps the one they like better.
  3. Reveal. The votes land, then the names come out, then the points. An answer that takes every vote is a clean sweep, worth one more vote.

Round two is worth double. In the final everyone answers the same prompt and gives gold, silver and bronze to three of the other answers, so the lead can change on the last screen. The full rules of Zinger.

When Quiplash is still the right pick

  • You already own it. Then you have the original, and if it came in a Party Pack, other games with it.
  • You play often and want the most prompts. Quiplash has been through several versions, each with prompts of its own. Zinger is new and its set is still growing, so a group that plays every week will meet a prompt again sooner here.
  • A stream’s viewers should vote. Quiplash takes votes from an audience of up to 10,000. In Zinger, people past the eighth player vote too, but they join the room to do it. Streaming Join Me Games.
  • You want your own prompts, or another language. Quiplash 2 lets players create custom episodes, and Quiplash 2: InterLASHional adds French, Italian, German and Spanish prompts. Zinger has neither yet.
  • The room is all adults and wants it that way. Quiplash is rated M 17+ with an optional family-friendly setting. Zinger’s prompts are family-safe and a word filter is always on.

When Zinger is the right pick

  • Nobody owns the game, or a console. Open a room on a phone, share the code, play.
  • You are one or two. Quiplash needs three players. Here bots take the empty seats, write answers and vote, and your own lines are the ones they are most likely to pick.
  • You are on a call. Every phone shows the whole game, so nobody has to share a screen or own anything. Playing remotely.
  • The kids are playing. The prompts are family-safe, the Kids setting deals only the ones picked for younger players, blocked words are refused, and the host can hide anything the filter misses.
  • There is a TV, and nobody wants to read aloud. Any browser on it shows each matchup and reads the prompt and both answers out loud.
  • You want something else afterwards. The room stays open; the host picks another game and nobody rejoins.

Questions

Is there a free Quiplash alternative?
Zinger on Join Me Games is free: two players get the same prompt, each writes the funniest answer they can on their own phone, and everyone else votes with no names showing. Nothing to buy or install, no account for anyone, and it runs in any browser.
How many people do you need?
A game needs three at the table, and bots fill the seats up to five, so one person can play and two people have a real game. The bots write answers and vote. Up to eight players write; anyone past eight votes on every matchup and gives medals in the final.
Do we need a TV, or to share a screen?
No. Every phone shows the prompts, the answers, the votes and the names, so it works round a table or on a call with nobody sharing a screen. If there is a TV, any browser on it shows the game bigger and reads each prompt and its answers out loud.
Can we write our own prompts?
Not yet. The prompts come with the game, and the host picks between the full set and the ones picked for younger players.
Is it family-friendly?
The prompts are written to be family friendly, and a Kids setting deals only the ones picked for younger players. Blocked words are refused when an answer is sent, and the host can hide any answer during the vote.
Is this made by Jackbox Games?
No. Quiplash, Jackbox and The Jackbox Party Pack are trademarks of Jackbox Games, Inc. Join Me Games is an independent site by Be Apped, and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Jackbox Games.
