Worm Wars Strategy: How to Win
Largest worm wins: Worm Wars goes to the first worm to cover a fifth of the floor, not to whoever eats the most worms. This guide is about getting there first: how to grow, when to fight, and how to stay alive while you do it.
The one thing that matters most
Your Floor percentage is your length times your width. Everything you eat makes you both longer and fatter, so growth speeds up the more you have. Once you are growing, eating twice as much covers about four times the floor.
Size feeds itself in other ways too. A fatter worm chews bugs faster, takes a bigger piece with every bite, and wins every head-to-head against a thinner one. So the early game is a race to get ahead, and the late game is about not giving that lead away.
Being eaten is the worst thing that can happen. You lose all your length and all your points, and the worm that ate you gets both. Staying alive matters more than any one bite.
Growing fast
- Eat constantly. A worm with an empty mouth is losing ground. Line up your next bug before you finish the one you are chewing.
- Go for big bugs when they are close. A huge bug is worth twelve small ones, and it walks slowest.
- Lunge into bugs. A bug caught during the burst goes down in a big gulp at once, so you are free for the next one sooner.
- You can only hold one bug. Others you touch while chewing are pushed away, so do not plough through a cluster expecting to eat it all in one pass.
- Caffeine and magnet mouth are growth powers. Caffeine triples your speed and your chewing; magnet pulls nearby bugs into your mouth. Grab them early, when they set up everything after.
Lunging and biting
A bite out of another worm grows you by exactly what it loses. Every bite during a lunge burst takes four times as much, not just the first, so a charged lunge into a body is the best trade in the game.
Charging slows your head to half speed and bunches your body up, which everyone can see. Charge where you are safe, or while your target is turned away, then fire when you are lined up.
After a bite you bounce off. A small worm biting a big one bounces farther, so it has to keep chasing. Stay on the body: you can bite the same worm again a third of a second later.
Aim for the back half of a worm. Its head is pointed away from you, so it cannot turn and catch you before you are gone.
Head to head
When two heads meet, the fatter worm swallows the other whole. It is decided by width, not length, and the swallow takes a second or less. Once you are caught, nothing you do will free you. The swallow only stops if the eater dies or burrows.
So check sizes before you go nose to nose. If you are clearly fatter, go straight for the head: it is the fastest way to grow in the game. If it is close, do not risk it.
Respect any head pointed at you. Turn away early, before it is in lunge range, because a lunge closes the gap at four times your speed.
Powerups and when to use them
- Frenzy: bites take three times as much and you barely bounce. With a lunge on top, one bite takes twelve times a normal one. Find the nearest body and stay on it for the whole 10 seconds.
- Helmet: you cannot bite while it lasts, so it does not grow you. It keeps you safe: any worm without a helmet that touches you dies. Use it to eat bugs in a crowd, or lay your body across a chaser’s path. A zapped worm gives nobody anything.
- Spikes: for 10 seconds, a bite on you costs the biter half its length, and a small worm that bites you dies and is yours. Feed in a busy spot and let them come.
- Venom: each bite poisons for 6 seconds. The poisoned worm is slowed and drips its length to you. Each bite adds 6 more seconds. Bite and move on to the next worm while the first one drips.
- Shrink ray: other players see you at half size, but head-to-head uses your real size. A player who thinks you are small may come at your head and get swallowed. Bots are not fooled.
- Sticky sand: lay patches behind you while you run, and any chaser is slowed to half speed. Loop around a worm to slow it for a bite.
Stored abilities and burrowing
Burrow, decoy and reverse wait until you use them, and they stay with you when you respawn. Hold one for trouble rather than firing it the moment you get it.
- Burrow is your escape. When a bigger head is closing in, dive. For 10 seconds nothing can touch you and nobody can see where you went, so you can come up somewhere else. It drops the bug in your mouth, so do not dive in the middle of a big meal unless you have to.
- Reverse is for when a worm is chewing your tail. Your tail becomes your head, now facing your attacker. If you are the fatter worm, that head is a threat.
- Decoy leaves a still copy of you. Drop it and turn away. Anyone tracking you on the minimap may follow the copy.
Plants and cover
Leaves hide you from other players, not from bots: wait under them for a tail to pass. Stems are solid, but a lunge jumps over them.
Common mistakes
- Going head to head without checking who is fatter.
- Charging a lunge in the open with a bigger worm nearby. You are half speed and easy to catch.
- Biting a worm wearing a helmet. It kills you.
- Biting a worm with spikes. You lose half your length, and a small worm dies.
- Using burrow or reverse the second you get them, then having nothing left when you are hunted.
Beating the bots
Bots follow the same rules you do. Each skill plays a little differently.
- Easy bots only notice bugs close by and never chase worms. Out-eat them early and they become meals.
- Medium bots eat across the whole arena and lunge for bugs. Now and then one hunts a worm less than half its size. Stay above that and they leave you alone.
- Hard bots always attack. One will go for your head if it is fatter, or sneak round to your tail if it is not. Keep moving, keep checking behind you, and stay fatter than they are.
- Every bot runs from a bigger head pointed at it. That makes a bot hard to catch head on. Come at its tail from behind, or catch it while it is busy.
- Bots steer clear of helmets and spikes. While you have one, bots will not touch you, so it is a safe time to feed.
- Bots break off for a moment after they are bitten.
Playing with a group
- Let the others fight. Two worms biting each other are both getting no closer to a fifth of the floor. Feed nearby and take a bite out of whoever comes out weaker.
- With respawn off, an eaten worm is out for the round, so staying alive comes first. Play safe, keep a burrow ready, and only fight when you are sure. The round still goes to the first worm to cover a fifth of the floor.
- With respawn on, standings go by score, and eating a worm takes all its points. Big catches swing the table.
Quick tips
- Size is width: check it before going nose to nose.
- Charge where it is safe, fire where it counts.
- Bite tails, not faces, unless you are clearly fatter.
Questions
- How do you win at Worm Wars?
- Largest worm wins: be the first to cover a fifth of the arena floor. Your floor share is your length times your width, so keep eating to grow both. Take bites out of other worms from behind, swallow smaller ones head to head, and avoid bigger heads.
- What is the best strategy for Worm Wars?
- Grow early by never letting your mouth sit empty, and grab caffeine and magnet bugs. Then fight only when you are fatter or coming from behind. Keep a burrow saved for when a bigger worm hunts you.
- How do you avoid being eaten in Worm Wars?
- Stay away from heads fatter than yours, and turn away before they are in lunge range. If one is closing in, burrow under the sand, drop a decoy, or hide under leaves from other players.
- When should you lunge in Worm Wars?
- Charge when you are safe and fire when you are lined up on a bug or a worm’s body. Every bite during the burst takes four times as much. While charging you move at half speed, so do not charge near a bigger head.
- What is the best powerup in Worm Wars?
- For growing, frenzy: bites take three times as much, and with a lunge one bite takes twelve times a normal one. For staying alive, burrow, which you can save until you need it.
