About Codewords

Codewords is a team word game for a room full of phones. Twenty-five words go on the board. Each side has a handler who secretly knows which words belong to their side, which are civilians, and which one is the assassin.

The handler gives a single word and a number: how many of their side’s words it points to. The guessers talk it over, out loud, and then one of them taps a card. The first tap on the side flips it for everyone, so the talking is the game and the tap is the decision. Their own word keeps the turn going, up to the number. Anyone else’s ends it.

Sides are picked first, then each side’s handler comes from its volunteers, the game favoring someone who has not had a turn yet. The side’s color is its handler’s color from the lobby, or a contrasting one if the two clash. First side to find every one of its words wins. Flip the assassin and you lose on the spot.

Questions
How many people do you need for Codewords?
Four or more: a handler and at least one guesser on each side. Bots from the lobby can fill seats, which is handy for trying it out.
Why does one tap flip the card? What if we disagree?
Because the arguing is the fun part, and it happens out loud, not in a menu. Talk until the side is ready, then one person taps. Nothing shows on anyone’s screen until the card flips, so the handler and the other side learn what you chose at the same moment you do.
Do we get a bonus guess?
Yes, one, as in the board game. Guess as many words as the number, then one more if you want it, or pass. It is handy for a word an earlier clue was pointing at; missing on it ends the turn like any miss.
Do I need an account?
No. Press Play and you are in as a guest, with a name picked for you. A guest lasts 24 hours. Sign in with Google or Apple to pick your own name and color and keep them on every device, or to take out a Party Pass. Your real name is never shown.
Do I need to download anything?
No. Every game runs in the browser on your phone, tablet or computer. Open joinme.games and play. You can add it to your home screen for an app-like experience.
How do my friends join?
Host a room and you get a short game code. Share the code or the invite link. Friends open it on their own phones and they are in the room straight away — nothing to press. The host starts the round for everyone.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. Any modern phone browser works, and the same game runs on a laptop or a tablet. Everyone in a group can be on different devices.
Is it free?
The games on this page are free to play. A Party Pass removes ads for you and everyone you host, and gives you a custom room code and a name of your own.
